Seniors - Encore Generation

Definition:

Encore - an additional performance in response to a demand.

Generation - a group of individuals born and living at the same time.

The Encore Generation at Christ Center Community Church is a group of people, generally aged 55 and above, who have spent many years raising families and building this nation and its churches. Many have now retired from their vocations, but they are still energetic and they desire to live the rest of their lives to the fullest. They have much wisdom, experience, vitality, and a desire for both fellowship and service to the Lord. At the same time, some have become incapacitated and need assistance. All are welcome to participate in the Encore Generation.

Purpose: Our purpose is to share the love of Jesus Christ with older members of our community by:

  • Giving spiritual encouragement
  • Providing opportunities to share gifts and talents within the church and community
  • Planning events that encourage fellowship and interaction
  • Visiting and assisting those in hospitals, health care facilities and their own homes.

Opportunities for Fellowship and Interaction:

Christ Center Encore Generation provides a good place for seniors to meet other seniors and become involved in fellowship and service.

  • Bible Study: Seniors are encouraged to participate with people of all ages in any of the Bible study groups on Sunday mornings or throughout the week.
  • Seniors Lunch Bunch: All seniors are invited to gather at 11:30 A.M. on the third Wednesday of each month at a local restaurant for food and fellowship. Check the Sunday Bulletin or the BREAKING NEWS box for the current restaurant selection. This group will help visitors get acquainted with other seniors in our congregation as well as provide time for “old timers” to interact.
  • Special Trips: Two or three times a year Encore Generation schedules a day trip to a nearby attraction for enrichment and enjoyment. Past destinations have been mountain excursions to view fall colors, Leanin’ Tree Greeting Card and Western Art Museum, Celestial Seasonings Tea Company, and drama productions by Encore! Encore! and Lost Marbles. Plans are being made to join a Longmont church for a special week long trip by motorcoach to Branson, Missouri this fall.

Ministries Available to Seniors:

  • Transportation: Church vans or cars are available to pick up anyone who needs transportation to church events. Special help may be available to take seniors to doctor appointments.
  • Homebound Communion: The Deacons and Deaconesses of the church serve communion to homebound seniors once a month.
  • Medical Assistance: In cooperation with the Aspen Club, an effort is made to provide such items as a “File of Life” form on which individuals may record important personal and medical information to assist emergency personnel if needed, medication boxes, and other helpful items. Assistance is available to those who may be making changes in living facilities.
  • Handyman Assistance: Several retired persons are willing to help seniors with minor home repairs or other needs.

Opportunities to Serve:

At Christ Center Community we encourage the Encore Generation to serve in all of the ministries of the church. In some cases they provide the leadership and much of the service.

  • Outreach: Christ Center provides food, clothing, and other household needs for the needy of our community. Most of the volunteers in the Outreach ministry of Christ Center are seniors.
  • Work Day Ladies: These busy ladies use their talents by making quilts, lap robes, toys, baby layettes and other items which are shared with organizations throughout our community. They also provide custom quilting for those who want their quilt tops quilted.
  • Transportation Ministry: Volunteer drivers become the “designated driver” to bring seniors and persons with special needs to church events.
  • Sunday Morning Greeters: Some of our seniors serve by greeting persons as they enter the church and sanctuary.
  • Handyman: This ministry is for those who are willing to repair things, replace leaky faucets, do a little painting, and help with upkeep of a home.
  • Visitation: The Lord calls us to provide for the needs of the widows, the sick, and the lonely. Developing a relationship with a senior shut-in through visits, taking the person to lunch or shopping, reading, writing letters, playing games or sharing interests brightens the days of those who aren’t able to interact with others often.
